The patron saint of music has inspired composers down the ages. We present a wealth of Renaissance and contemporary settings in her honour, together with seasonal advent texts. Britten’s 1942 setting of W H Auden’s text is regarded as an important work in his output as it marked a return to choral writing. Joyful madrigalian influences are echoed in our programme’s 16th century pieces by Philips, Marenzio, Rogier and Ramsay. Jackson’s substantial setting of Cecilia Virgo from 2000 reflects his love of early Tudor sonorities.
