13 July 2019: A Light in the Darkness

St Michael le Belfrey

Poulenc’s typically colourful Mass in G sits with very recent reflections on Tudor masterpieces by Tallis, Byrd and White, many on the theme of Light. We also include contemporary music by other foremost British composers including Karl Jenkins, who celebrates his 75th birthday this year, and Bob Chilcott who sets translations of texts by Paul Eluard (whose texts were often set by his friend Poulenc) in his beautiful and contemplative Simple Pictures of Tomorrow. Three of the pieces in this concert - O Light of Light, Night Prayer and Archbishop Parker’s Psalm 150 - were commissioned by the award winning vocal ensemble ORA Singers.
